What's real confusing (and why I avoided specific button names) is X Box flipped the spots for A, B, X, and Y.X Box copied the Playstation controller, which itself was Sony's deliberate attempt to modernize the SNES controller. When the SNES introduced two more buttons the left button often handled running or shooting while the bottom button often did the jumping (Super Mario World and Mega Man X.) If you don't switch the NES controllers A and B buttons early on in the main menu, the only other option you have is constantly changing between core or game remaps and that's clunky and impractical. This way I can plug in whatever controller I want, load up a core, and it would be the same feeling layout, no matter how many buttons I have. Then I save the core or game overrides on top of that. If I want to apply this to another core (start with Nestopia) I load that one and merely save that remap to the Gambatte core. I save this remap (of the virtual control Retroarch made in the Main menu) to a Core or Game remap file while under the Quick Menu. (For example, I have B set to the left button and A set to the bottom button and the right button. I have specific controller overrides in place (on the quick menu) to make an X Box style controller play NES and Gameboy games comfortably and intuitively. It's best to make the NES controller odd-man-out because you're only swapping two buttons. When assigning your NES controller buttons in the Main Menu, simply match it to what the X Box controller's buttons are doing. Take another picture of that Virtual Controller's remap under the Quick Menu. Delete whatever game/core controller remaps you have: Even compilations like the Mega Man Collection have A and B defaulted to where the Switch had A and B and it feels very weird without tweaking. The Switch Online NES games are a prime example of this, except there's no customization. This sounds to me like a problem inherent to translating 2 button to 4 button setups.
